What impressed me most was the methodical way you worked through the manual and l can honestly say that after having boats for nearly 40 years, l learned a lot from you. Cyril Hondris I have learnt over the last 12 years in boat sales that if the wife or partner is not prepared to get on the boat her Husband is keen on buying, then there is a good chance the pending purchase will not go ahead! Not a good scenario for a boat broker. In many circumstances this is not because the partner dislikes the boat but more simply she is just not confident onboard boat. ‘What happens if my husband has a heart attack or falls overboard, how will I drive the boat?’ ‘He always yells at me when we are trying to moor or anchor.’ (This particular verbal abuse usually comes from a skipper with a lack of confidence girls.) How do we resolve this problem fellas? Well, R Marine has a secret weapon - Tracy Leveridge-Smith runs her own business training both women and men in boat handling and has been for years. I realized when Tracy joined us Friday last for one of our R Marine Rottnest Raftups, that she has given tuition to many of our customers on all sizes of boats from tinnies to luxury cruisers already. She knows everyone and has a knack for getting the girls behind the wheel! Recently Tracy instructed 24 women (Riviera owners) the boating basics over a weekend onboard our new Riviera 48 Offshore. The result was amazing! The two hour sessions were just enough to give the girls the confidence they required to make them more relaxed onboard. Tuition included everything from rope handling to actually driving and berthing the vessel. I had complaints the next few days from angry husbands who were being pestered to take their wives out for more practice and they were no longer allowed behind the helm. One lady in particular hired Tracy for an extra 4 hours one on one, gaining enough confidence to then skipper their Riviera 33 to Geographe Bay and back on our recent convoy while, her partner reclined.
